Founded in Scotland in 2005, the International Mountain Conference (IMC) is recognized as the world’s leading international mountain research conference. This year, it takes place from September 11 to 15 in Innsbruck, Austria.

As with the previous edition in 2019, the organizers of IMC 2022 are from the Mountain Regions research axis of the University of Innsbruck, located in the heart of the Alps.

More than eighty conferences, workshops and other events will bring together some 800 participants from all over the world, to share the results of their research on the mountains, on a variety of themes: the impact of altitude on climate change; risks associated with glaciers and permafrost; the status and future of water; the impact of diminishing snow and ice cover; grasslands in the face of global change; adaptation strategies; the quest for climate neutrality; protected natural areas as tools for sustainable development; the future of leisure activities and the consequences for Alpine wildlife…

Many Labex ITTEM researchers will be attending the event and presenting their work to the scientific community. Topics will include the Refuges sentinelles and Alpages sentinelles programs, glacier tourism in a changing climate, social innovations around the Transformont project, energy issues in the Andes and the Alps, water resource issues in the context of winter tourism, and the research residency organized by the Perce-Neige collective in the Vercors.

Inhabited by over a billion people worldwide, mountain regions provide up to a quarter of the world’s population with vital resources such as water. Highly impacted by the effects of climate change and socio-economic mutations, these regions today represent a crucial field of study for scientists from a variety of disciplines.
