Transition Under Pressure – An Investigation and Documentary in the Massif Central
The film *Transition sous tension* ( 2024, 52 minutes) by Violeta Ramirez is based on an anthropological study conducted in the Allier department regarding the possible opening of a lithium mine. By interviewing various local stakeholders, the film explores how energy transition policies are received locally and how environmental changes are perceived.
Movie Synopsis
Échassières, in the Allier department: 400 residents, a few shops holding their own, and a subsoil rich in resources. Following the mining of tungsten and kaolin, lithium is now in the spotlight. For some, the extraction of this mineral—essential for electric mobility—will be the key to the region’s demographic and economic survival, as well as an important step toward ensuring national security regarding critical raw materials. For others, intensive mining of the subsoil will amount to a headlong rush that causes major environmental impacts—an anachronism at a time when we are exceeding planetary boundaries. By presenting the contrasting viewpoints of local residents, the film highlights the uncertainties surrounding energy transition policies in a region directly affected by their implementation.
