MarchAlp – Armed march in the Alps

15

The project is based on a historic event that took place in the summer of 1515, as a prelude to the victory at Marignan: the armored crossing of the Vars and Larche Alpine passes by King François I, accompanied by thousands of men, horses and cannons. Marchalp aims to reconstruct this effort, in the laboratory and in the field, by restoring the constraints of this crossing thanks to the combined contributions of history, biomechanics, computer science and physiology.

A scientific research project accredited by the CNRS as part of its 80th anniversary initiatives, Marchalp has a strong interdisciplinary dimension, also involving UGA students working on the period and/or the mountain environment. Marchalp raises the question of the augmented body and its maladaptation to an environment as specific as the mountains, while examining perceptions of verticality over time.

The theme and spirit of the project are designed to appeal to a wide audience. As a result, it resonates with the general public, notably through the documentaries it has been the subject of. Find out more about the Marchalp project in the “Science and Society” section.

Starting in 2021, the Carmo project is a continuation of the research carried out as part of Marchalp.
