The 5th Mountain Research School, a doctoral summer school at the heart of mountain territories, will be held from August 24 to 29, 2025, as part of a partnership between Labex ITTEM, OSUG and Architectures, with the Long Term Socio Ecosystem Research (LTSER) Lautaret-Oisans platform. It will take place at the Jardin du Lautaret for the first two days, then at Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans.
The Mountain Research School (MRS) is a place for doctoral training in interdisciplinarity between human and social sciences and earth and environmental sciences in mountain regions. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, participants will be invited to question the roles and positions of scientists in the face of natural hazards impacting mountain regions, based on the events at La Bérarde (upper Vénéon valley) in 2024.
What role can research play in the life of a territory subjected to such hazards, from risk prevention to post-disaster reconstruction support? What is its legitimacy? How can we understand, from a research perspective, the public debates and controversies surrounding these issues?
Once again, this edition of the MRS will be at the heart of current affairs in the territories, where the consequences of climate change are causing increasing upheaval to local balances, whether environmental, social or economic.
At the crossroads of the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Earth and Environmental Sciences, the MRS is aimed primarily at doctoral students from Labex partner units ITTEM, OSUG and Architectures, as well as doctoral students from the Graduate School@UGA’s MetroFabLab, Risk, Steen and Terra thematic programs. However, it is open to all PhD students whose research topic has a direct link with mountains. It may be recognized as part of the doctoral training program. The Labexes cover the costs of supervision, accommodation and meals, with the exception of transport to Grenoble (departure by minibus from Grenoble) for participants located within the perimeter of the three Labexes concerned.
As part of a collaborative research program, the Mountain Research School is helping to build the LTSER Lautaret-Oisans platform as part of the European eLTER project.
Pre-registration is open until May 12, 2025 on the Labex Osug website.
