A mountain of resources

Début du projet : 2025

Studying a mountain region over a long period of time, and the links with its stakeholders, was the challenge facing students in the Master’s program inApplied History: Society, Environment, Territory. This year, they investigated the heart of the Chartreuse.

The students spent two days in the field, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. From the development of the area by the monks to its current transition with the closure of the resorts, they looked at its many resources, whether natural, material, cultural or spiritual.

The interest of this mid-mountain region, located between Savoie and Isère and not far from regional metropolises, lies in the fact that it combines an ancient occupation in the heart of nature (Grande Chartreuse monastery in 1084), a place for exploiting natural resources (wood, metallurgy, liqueur), for resourcing and leisure (monastery, tourism), for artistic creation (Arcabas) and for protection (Regional Nature Park).

The methodology deployed for this workshop is based on an approach to the field in interaction with its stakeholders, including visits to sites such as the Grande Chartreuse monastery, and interviews prepared and conducted by the students with the mayor, the tourist office, the Regional Nature Park, the Arcabas Museum and the Raidlight company headquarters.
