In the Ardèche: Mountains and People Along the River

Début du projet : 2026

This educational project invites students in the Master 2 program in Geography, Human-Environment Spaces, and Resources (Geospheres) to explore mountain landscapes by following the course of the water. In the Ardèche region, characterized by karst topography, underground water flows, and resurgences, they observe how water shapes environments, land uses, and societies alike.

The site of this educational workshop is a true open-air laboratory. Students investigate springs, rivers, water intake structures, water distribution systems, agricultural practices, and water use for tourism and domestic purposes, as well as the risks associated with droughts, flash floods, and conflicts between different uses.

Participants are also interested in the stakeholders who share and manage this resource, with the goal of understanding that landscapes are not static and that they bear the traces of past developments and practices, as well as collective choices that continue to influence today’s territories.

By combining field observations, maps, data, archival materials, and discussions with local stakeholders, students learn to connect the environment, history, and society. They then present their findings in the form of a research proposal. Working in groups, they produce a 5-page preliminary proposal and present their project orally.
