Many tourist destinations are in a development phase characterized by saturation of their visitor capacity. This situation, known as overtourism, puts heavy pressure on the local economy, the environment and host communities, often upsetting the balance between benefits and costs.

The health crisis is an opportunity for these destinations to rethink their business model and visitor flow management strategy, with a view to developing sustainable tourism that respects both the environment and host communities.

The Livingin project – Territoires en surtourisme et interactions résidents-touristes : de l’attitude aux réactions comportementales des communautés locales – at the crossroads of geography, sociology and management, questions the limits of today’s tourism system.

Two European tourist destinations are being studied: Lake Annecy, which suffers from tourist pressure, particularly during the summer months, and Copenhagen, whose city center has been identified as an “at-risk” district threatening the quality of life of its residents. The richness of the exchanges with the residents of these two destinations will feed into the strategic reflection carried out by the stakeholders on the transitions to be envisaged.
