Farmer farms: agroecology and forests, from the Pre-Alps to the Andes

Using a multidisciplinary approach combining geography, anthropology and political ecology, the thesis “Between distance and power games: peasant-forest relations on farms. A study in the French Préalpes d’Azur and the Colombian Andes” examines the relationship between peasants and forests through their agroecological practices and the organization of mountain farms in these two regions of the world.

By cross-analyzing peasant communities in Colombia and France, the thesis seeks to analyze the practices and relationships that develop between peasants and forests. The method used is based on interviews, plans and maps. All these tools leave plenty of room for the words of local players.

With the aim of reaching a wide audience, this research project intends to produce a photo and video documentary to highlight the relationship between agriculture and nature. An initial photographic exhibition has been designed based on elements of the thesis and the work carried out with the Conseil de Développement and the Association des Agriculteurs du Parc des Préalpes d’Azur, with the aim of demonstrating the complexity of agroecological practices. Indeed, their analysis demonstrates complex implementation logics that go beyond the preconceptions that often describe or idealize the relationship between agriculture and nature.

On its own scale, this work questions the ecological transition and conservation of mountain agricultural and forest ecosystems through the implementation of hybrid political systems (combining humans and nature).
