Mountain Research School 2024: diving into the heart of controversy
This year, the Mountain Research School – the doctoral school organized from August 25 to 30, 2024 by Labex ITTEM and OSUG – will be held at the Jardin du Lautaret, at an altitude of 2100 meters in the Hautes-Alpes.
In this privileged environment, the lung of scientific research into the effects of climate change and human practices on mountain ecosystems, participants will be invited to reflect on the commitment of researchers and their relationship to the controversies shaking mountain territories.
Using the specific case of the Girose glacier, above the village of La Grave, as a starting point – they will attempt to decipher its ins and outs – they will consider the role and positioning of researchers in the debate on the future of the mountains, their territories and their development. Where and how does the scientific approach fit into these controversies? Should researchers take sides? Can they even avoid it?
The 2024 edition of the Mountain Research School is thus right at the heart of current events, at a time when the consequences of climate change in mountain regions are at the root of major social controversies, legitimizing more than ever the contribution of scientific expertise to the debate.
At the crossroads of human and social sciences and earth and environmental sciences in mountain regions, the Mountain Research School is aimed primarily at PhD students from Labex ITTEM and OSUG partner laboratories, but is open to all PhD students whose research topic has a direct link with mountains. It may be recognized as part of the doctoral training program. Labex covers the costs of supervision, accommodation and meals, with the exception of transport to Grenoble (departure by bus from Grenoble).
With a view to collaborative research, the Mountain Research School is contributing to the construction of the Lautaret-Oisans Long Term Socio-Ecosystem Research (LTSER) platform as part of the European eLTER project.
Pre-registration is open until June 1, 2024 on the Labex Osug website.
