Glacier de la Girose, sensitive side
In the wake of the controversy surrounding the planned construction of the third section of the La Grave cable car, eighteen researchers have come together to express what they know and feel about the Girose glacier. Their contributions to the public debate come from a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, earth sciences and life sciences.
Synopsis
In the upper Romanche valley, in the north of the Écrins massif, a glacier called Girose is the subject of a project to build a third section of cable car designed to increase the tourist offer. Between economic arguments and ecological issues, between the dominant political vision and the questioning of the tourism industry, this book explores the different sides of a crisis that speaks volumes about our society and its relationship with the world. These multi-faceted contributions combine scientific knowledge and sensitive accounts. Botany, ecology, geography, geology, glaciology, history and sociology show us what they can teach us about places. Their interweaving reveals the complexity of what is currently at stake at La Grave, and questions the continuation of high-mountain development in a context of socio-environmental crises accentuated by climate change.
