Transition and mountain sports tourism – The case of Col de Porte

Début du projet : 2025

The aim of this collective work is to understand the issues linked to the recreational activities that structure the Col de Porte site, and in particular to understand how they coexist with agricultural activities (pastoral and forestry) and the imperatives of preserving biodiversity.

This workshop, offered by the Master’s degree in “Sport Management: Tourism and Mountains (MSTM)” at Grenoble Alpes University, aims to understand the dynamics at work in the transition to mountain recreation, against a backdrop of climate change and societal evolution.

The field study consists of drawing up an inventory of the situation at the Col de Porte in terms of pre-identified issues, taking into account the peri-urban geo-touristic configuration of the Col de Porte: comparison with other sites, analysis of existing scientific and technical literature, interviews with local practitioners. Ultimately, the aim is to analyze the actions already carried out on the site, and to propose possible new courses of action, such as ideas and recommendations aimed at improving the management and organization of the area.

Welcomed and accommodated on site, the students met with key players in tourism and leisure at Col de Porte: the École de Porte, the Communauté de communes Cœur de Chartreuse, Grenoble Alpes Métropole, the Office national des forêts, the Fédération des alpagistes de l’Isère and the on-site accommodation managers (Domaine de Rozan and Hôtel des 3 Sommets).

The exploration phase identified two major issues facing the Col de Porte today: renewing public awareness of environmental and social issues; and managing visitor flows and the cohabitation of different activities and users on the site.
