The diversification of sporting and recreational activities is leading to an increase in year-round use of mountain areas. These changes in use raise the question of the impact of these activities on the natural environment and the wildlife it supports.

The aim of this thesis project is to study changes in recreational use of mountain areas and the interrelationships between users and wild ungulates in contrasting protection contexts. The aim is to combine :

– an analysis of the practice styles of nature sports enthusiasts
– a study of riders’ relationship with the mountain environment and wild animals
– an analysis of the spaces shared by hikers and wild animals

One of the challenges is also to strengthen interdisciplinarity between the human and social sciences and ecology in order to better understand the changes affecting mountain socio-ecosystems and the resulting uses.
