Mountains in transition: Le Flocon Vert in Chamrousse

15

To what extent and how are mountain tourism players responding to climate issues? Master 2 SEST students explore this question in Chamrousse, a mountain resort on the outskirts of Grenoble which, to structure its tourism transition, has signed up to the Flocon Vert initiative created by the Mountain Riders association.

Mountains are the first victims of climate change. While the facts are now generally accepted, the challenge is to take action. For mountain resorts, this means developing a shared vision of the future and equipping themselves with the tools to achieve it.

Mountain Riders is an association that has been working for the past twenty years with voluntary players to support the ecological transition of mountain resorts. To this end, it has created the Flocon vert label. Its aim is, on the tourism supply side, to initiate and structure the ecological transition of mountain resorts by involving local players, and, on the demand side, to provide a clear vision of mountain tourist destinations committed to more responsible tourism.

Since 2017, Chamrousse resort has been committed to this Flocon Vert approach. Today, it is entering the label renewal phase.

The aim of this field workshop is to give students a concrete understanding of this process, from the dual angle of territorial governance and tourism strategy. Students will be confronted with the organization of dialogue between the territory’s stakeholders, and will analyze the concrete actions put in place.
