Mountains and education at the heart of a symposium

September 8, 2022 sees the opening of the international symposium Montagne enseignante, Montagne enseignée, organized by the International Association for the History of the Alps.

What kind of society does the mountain create through its teaching?Which mountains are taught? And what kind of development, education and values do they transmit? How and why have the mountains, despite the tyranny of their environment – or perhaps because of it – always been a place of learning, for the mind, body and senses, at both individual and collectivelevels?By virtue of the adaptive dynamics implemented in different eras, depending on economic, political, social and cultural contexts, mountain areas can also become a kind of model for other areas, and be taught and taught themselves.

These are just some of the questions and themes that will be addressed during the event, the first day of which will take place at the Isère departmental archives in Grenoble. Anne-Marie Granet-Abisset and Stéphane Gal, researchers at the Laboratoire de recherche historique Rhône-Alpes(Larhra) at Grenoble Alpes University and members of Labex ITTEM, will provide the scientific introduction. Labex, a partner of the event, will also be represented by Mikaël Chambru, its new co-coordinator.

On September 9 and 10, the symposium will move to the Isère town of La Mure, in its Espace culturel. On this occasion, the public round table ” How to revitalize a mountain region through culture and research: the example of the Matheysin plateau ” will be held on September 9 at 6pm.

On the eve of the symposium, the“Teaching mountains” workshop is organized in partnership with Appalachian State University, theTransalps axis of MSH-Alpes and Larhra.
